The American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) is the international organization for professionals skilled in the design, specification and inspection of plumbing systems. ASPE is dedicated to the advancement of the science of plumbing engineering, to the professional growth and advancement of its members and the health, welfare and safety of the public. The Society disseminates technical data and information, sponsors activities that facilitate interaction with fellow professionals, and, through research and education, expands the base of knowledge of the plumbing engineering industry. ASPE members are leaders in innovative plumbing design, effective materials and energy use, and the application of advanced techniques throughout the world. Legally formed as a non-profit organization in 1999, PQRI conducts research to generate scientific information to support regulatory policy. Together, both organizations provide industry professionals with a neutral environment to collaborate on pharmaceutical product quality research and development.

The San Diego Chapter was formed by a core of engineers and other professionals associated with the rapidly growing biotechnology community in the fall of 1992. The inaugural meeting was held in March 1993 and was attended by more than 140 representatives from some of San Diego’s primary biotechnology and related firms. V. Swaminathan (Swami) is the current President. The San Diego Chapter presently has almost 500 members. The program was initially designed to re-train laid-off defense workers to become viable biopharm industry employees. Today, the program is a certificate program geared specifically to keeping professionals and others up-to-date on current advances and regulatory issues in the biomedical industry.
